The Essence of Home

The Essence of Home exhibition invites visitors to delve into the profound concept of home through the eyes of seven international artists. Some share a personal experience of moving from one home to another, unraveling the emotional challenges associated with such transition. Others take a broader view, contemplating the nature of our time on Earth and questioning whether it will remain our only home planet. By exploring diverse narratives, the exhibition seeks to question what it means to have a home as a human being, examining notions of belonging, displacement, and the impact of migration on artistic expression.

Each artist offers a unique perspective on the theme of home. Reflecting on environmental warnings, we can’t ignore how the imminent threat of extinction shapes our understanding of home and our collective future. In a moment of distress among signals of disaster, the exhibition celebrates the small, yet powerful poetic gestures, meant to inspire hope and honor the monumental symbols of life on Earth.

The Essence of Home exhibition addresses the profound impact of migration and disconnection from a native cultural ecosystem on an artistic practice, whilst at the same time recognizing opportunities and connections emerging from new environments. It explores how these experiences shape artistic language and expression, offering new perspectives on the concept of home away from home through a socio-cultural lens.

Welcome the exhibition curator – Ismay Dotinga.
