We continued the series with Sarah Khan, who joined us to discuss her “undisciplinary” research practice and the role of consciousness, theology, and biological sciences as sources of inspiration in her work.
Sarah shares her journey of bridging science, spirituality, and art, from her background in synthetic biology and lunar geology to how she brings a broader philosophical perspective to standard scientific definitions of life. She discusses the integration of Quranic concepts of non-human consciousness and unseen realms, and walks us through her contribution to the Moon Bound Book: a literary piece written in Pashto—”An Astral Witness to the Anatomy of the Soul”.
Sarah’s work will be the first writing in Pashto to exist on the lunar surface, adding additional significance for speakers of this language in an era of rhetoric around the diversification of spaceflight.
Sarah Khan is a post-disciplinary researcher based in Peshawar. Her work moves across and beyond synthetic biology, geosciences, and art, investigating life at its thresholds through projects ranging from bacterial sensors and pigments to speculative archives of the afterlife. Through her artistic practice, she integrates scientific inquiry with spiritual frameworks, navigating the space between material and metaphysical worlds.
