We continued the series with Arthur Woods, who joined us to discuss his space art practice and the role of cosmic perspective and aerospace technology as a source of inspiration in his work.
Arthur shares his journey of bringing space into his art, from growing up near Cape Canaveral to witnessing the Apollo 11 launch in 1969. He discusses historic milestones like sending his Cosmic Dancer sculpture to the Mir space station in 1993, curating the first-ever orbital art exhibition in 1995 (Ars Ad Astra), and walks us through his “Greater Earth” contribution to the Moon Bound Book.
Arthur also highlights his work with his company Astrostrom, to develop a lunar solar power satellite, and its plans to establish a Greater Earth Energy Organisation.
Arthur Woods is an astronautical artist and independent researcher, based in Switzerland, who is historically significant for realizing multiple official art interventions in Earth orbit: the Cosmic Dancer project (1993), and Ars Ad Astra: The 1st Art Exhibition in Earth Orbit (1995) were realized on the Mir space station. Through his aerospace company, Astrostrom, he collaborates on cutting-edge feasibility studies with the European Space Agency (ESA)—focusing on manufacturing space-based solar power satellites on the Moon to resolve Earth’s energy and climate crises.
