Barbara Brownie
Every month, Moon Gallery hosts a meeting with Moon Bound artists — a space for sharing creative practices and insights into their contributions to Moon Bound Book.
In this presentation, Barbara Brownie tells us about her work, “Earth Sightseeing Itinerary for the Moon”. The work appears in Moon Bound in two forms: English and, on the neighbouring page, an unknown lunar language. Barbara discusses the two main inspirations for this work: First, the parallels between astronauts’ Operations Data Files and George Brecht’s Event Scores; and second, pseudowriting and xenolinguistics.
Dr Barbara Brownie is an Associate Dean at the Royal College of Art, where she co-leads the Space research group. Her research considers space as a site for creative practice, with a particular focus on the effects of microgravity on art and design. Her two most recent books are Spacewear: Weightlessness and the Final Frontier of Fashion (Bloomsbury, 2019), and Art in Orbit: Art Objects and Spaceflight (Bloomsbury, 2025).
