Helen Schell
Every month, Moon Gallery hosts a meeting with Moon Bound artists — a space for sharing creative practices and insights into their contributions to Moon Bound Book.
We opened the series with Helen Schell, who joined us to discuss her artistic practice and research — sharing the ideas and stories behind her work in the Moon Bound Book and her broader engagement with the space-art field.
Central to her presentation is her project The Human Spaceship: Off Balance, which uses bold, large-scale paintings with geometric optical illusions to explore what it means to live off-world — in particular how altered gravity affects visual perception. Helen also shares her contribution to the Moon Bound Book and introduces “Moonish” — her reinvention of the Moon alphabet, a form of raised reading similar to Braille, originally developed by Dr. William Moon, which she uses to encode poetic lunar messages and as a tool for cross-language communication in workshops and residencies.
Since 2007, UK based artist, Helen Schell has created artwork inspired by 21st century space endeavours (human factors). This award winning work takes the form of large geometric optical illusions and space technology paintings, costumes and books which express visual perception in altered gravity. This includes Moon-shot: Woman on the Moon, which has led to research visits to NASA JSC in 2019 & 25 and collaborations with many UK universities.
